I know I've said it before, but military homecomings are one of my favorite things to photograph! There's so much emotion wrapped up in just the first few moments when she sees him again for the first time! Ugh. I just love it!
So, I was super excited when I heard from Amy about capturing her soldiers homecoming at Dulles International Airport, VA. I got to ask Amy a few questions about Kyle's deployment and I'm excited to share their story as well as photos of the beautiful, reunited couple. They are so fun!
Tell us a little bit about your story...
We went to the same high school but didn’t really know each other. After I graduated I moved to DC to go to George Washington University. I went back to WI for that summer after freshman year to have my second knee surgery and work…a lot. My best friend Tiny (Melissa) still lives in the state and one day she asked if I wanted to come over which, as much as I love her, I didn’t. I had gotten off a double work shift and it was still so much colder in WI than DC so I felt miserable, but she can be very convincing.
Well, in the 20 minutes it took me to get over to her house, she had made us new plans…we were going to go hang out with some of her other friends instead--people I had never met. When we arrived, Kyle was there. He says that he knew he was interested from the moment I walked into the room. I didn’t even notice him…
We all went out for a late dinner and, in a total girl moment, Melissa pulled me into the bathroom and told me she was pretty sure Kyle was into me. I had to ask which guy he was! OOPS! Turns out it ended up working in his favor though. Our first date was at I-HOP the morning before my second surgery and we officially started dating June 1, 2011. Then, on July 4th, Kyle proposed to me at the Air Force Memorial in Pentagon City.
How long has he been deployed?
Kyle deployed May 25, 2014, so 6 months, 179 days if we are being technical ;) I am so proud of him for doing this and filling a position voluntarily instead of having somebody else's family disrupted who had children or had already deployed before.
What do you guys like doing together?
We are basically perfect old people--except we aren’t old haha! We have our own little rituals. Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune every night, Buffalo Wild Wings on Mondays, and I-HOP on Thanksgiving. We turned our upstairs office into a multipurpose room so I can sew and Kyle can play his guitar next to me. We’ve spent too much time apart; we like to find ways to follow our own interests in the same space.
What’s next for you two?
Hmm...that’s a good question. Kyle wants to do more training to get into the job field he really wants to be in in the Air Force so that’s on the books. We are also starting to talk about PCS opportunities but for the short term we are just looking forward to some time together. He’s already asked for wings when we get home on Thursday so I suppose that’s the most immediate "next" for us :)
